No Seed Starting This Year

seed starting mixture

With our home on the market I decided that I would not be starting any seeds indoors this year. Usually in early March I am busy mixing up a batch of my seed starting mixture.potting soil, seed starting

I also have a wonderful table my husband made that just fits the two grow lights I have. I usually set it up in our kitchen in front of a west-facing window. The seeds do very well there until it is time to move them outside.grow lights, seed startingMy seed order was placed and I have received the seeds I ordered from Solstice Seeds, our local seed saver. I know these seeds which were harvested just a few towns away will do perfectly in my garden.

Real estate sales are slow in Vermont, but in case we do have a showing I decided I didn’t have to have the whole seeds starting business taking place in my kitchen. We’re trying to keep the house clean and de-cluttered!

It’s been years since I haven’t started any seeds and I will miss the early signs of spring taking place in the kitchen! I always enjoyed watching the seeds coming to life!seedlings, seed starting

Unless we have an offer on our house in the next two months I am planning to grow a vegetable garden! I have several sources to buy vegetable plants such as tomatoes and peppers. I won’t have as much choice as I would if I were starting my own seeds but I still plan to grow heirloom plants.Ripe tomatoes. Will you be planting a vegetable garden this year? Do you start your own plants or purchase plants? I miss having my seedlings in the kitchen but I look forward to the garden season which will be here before I know it!Garden all planted!

  1. Oh, I remember how difficult it was living in limbo when we put our house on the market. To garden or not to garden?? It was painful. I hear your optimism and I wish you all the best!

  2. It’s such a pity you can’t start your own seeds. Wish you luck with your new plants 🙂 I just finished with starting my seeds and my girls just can’t wait to start working in the garden with me. They take a great care of or seedlings and are very good young gardeners. Happy gardeners!

    1. Elizabeth,
For the last twenty years I have always started my own seeds so it is quite strange to not have them in my kitchen! However I do have friends that also start their own seeds and sell the extra so I do have a good source of plants. I am ever hopeful our house will sell sooner than later! 🙂

  3. Hi Nancy , oh ! but you must think about taking cuttings from the more precious plants in your garden , to take with you when you move to your new home .
There are flowers growing in my garden that hold such memories ! : )

  4. This is my first year starting tomatoes and peppers from seed (which is all I’ve started so far). I totally love seeing them growing, even while it’s still snowy outside! I look forward to starting herbs and a few other things next week when I get back from a trip.

  5. We’re getting ready to sell our home too – Hope to have on the market in May no later than June. So that was my big question how will I plant. I’m going all out because I decided to promote the sell of our home as a ready to move in homestead. I may even leave some chickens and a coop behind as a bargaining chip. So I started planting last week. Will do more later this weekend, doing mostly direct seed it’s my favorite.

    1. Carole,
I am not starting any seeds inside this year but I am planning my garden and will direct plant seeds and purchase tomato and pepper plants from our local nursery. Hopefully someone will be inspired by all my gardens! It is a ready to move in homestead, with chicken coop and all!

  6. That would be difficult to do…to NOT start a garden like normal. I’m glad that you have an opportunity to live your dream and hope your house sells quickly! Thanks fo adding this to From The Farm, it’s one of this week’s favorites!

  7. We have some plants started, but also used started strawberries, lettuce, onions, cabbage and brussels sprouts. I actually need to transplant some seedlings this weekend. We haven’t done a lot of vegetable gardening the last few years, so even having anything growing is an improvement.

Thanks for sharing on the Homestead Blog Hop.
