We have had my daughter’s dog, a Boston Terrier on and off through the years. Several years ago when we were taking care of Riley she got skunked! Apparently she thought the black and white critter outside our bedroom window was a distant cousin to a Boston Terrier!
Up until that point we had never had any trouble with skunks. Neither our pug, Purtie, nor our chocolate lab, Gracie, ever had an encounter with a skunk. However, this all changed one night when we had Riley under our roof. We had just let Riley outside to do her business and in a mater of minutes Riley came running back to the house. At the same time we smelled skunk. Poor Riley sat on the steps while we tried to figure out the best way to treat her.
What To Do When You’ve Been Skunked!
Luckily just days before I had read something about using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to treat a dog sprayed by a skunk.
Talk about good timing! Luckily we had all the ingredients on hand (it is prudent to have a well stocked pantry). We soon had a much better smelling and very clean dog. There was still a slight odor of skunk so she did have to spend the night in the laundry room.
If your dog runs into a skunk here is a wonderful recipe that I can vouch for!
Skunked? Quick Solution!
Ingredients:
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
¼ pound baking soda
Bit of laundry detergent of dish soap
Directions:
Mix the hydrogen peroxide with the baking soda. Add just a bit of laundry detergent or soap to help with the washing process. Rub the mixture over your dog and then rinse with water.
This worked so well on the dog. Getting the smell off of the steps to the house was another story.

Riley is now living in Portland, Oregon and hopefully will not ever run into a skunk again. It was certainly not something she was very happy about!

Oh goodness. Poor girl. I’m glad you knew what to do! I’ve never heard that remedy.
We’ve never had that problem. Our dogs were lucky I guess! But they were always light color. Maybe the stupid skunk mistook her for a friend and got too close then realized she was a dog!

Poor Riley, don’t look a bit happy about spending time in the laundry room. The look on Riley’s face is like;
‘ I done nothing wrong, why do I have to spend ‘time out’ in the laundry room away from my loving family.’
Actually when I was a small child (many, many moons ago) I was skunked and my mom gave me a bath in an outside tub and washed; scrubbed me down with tomato juice.

I love your dog! I had a pug and jack russell mix and she was a wonderful pet. I miss her. We also had a german shepherd mix. She was a kind dog and not as aggressive as german shepherds can be. Anyways, she got skunked and her fur was an inch long and very thick. It was summer so we used a hose and the recipe you used and it definitely works! It took a few times with her since her fur was so thick. I hope your dog is doing well after her scary experience!

Oh, poor Riley! I was interested to read about the remedy though – a lot of our friends in Canada have dogs and I know there is always a search for the best remedy. Believe it or not, there are virtually no skunks in the UK – although apparently they did find one wild colony back in 2009. I haven’t heard of them since though. Having grown up in Canada I remember the odour is unmistakeable!! Thank you for sharing with us at the Hearth and Soul Link Party.
