Road Trip: The Blackburn Inn, Staunton, Virginia

On our drive north during our recent road trip we spent a night at The Blackburn Inn located in Staunton, Virginia. We were treated to a night of luxury. The Blackburn Inn was constructed in 1828. The Inn was envisioned and influenced by master builder and Thomas Jefferson’s protégé, Thomas R. Blackburn.

 

The Inn was formerly part of the Western State Hospital. It has been renovated and restored to create a atmosphere that is both inspiring and welcoming. Set on a picturesque 80 acre campus in Staunton with stunning views everywhere. The evening we were there the grounds were dancing with the hundreds & hundreds of fireflies all blinking on and off across the front lawn as we came in after supper was really a magical touch.

 

The rooms are large and comfortable, a blend of historic roots and upscale modern comforts. It creates a high-end indulgent experience.

 

Downtown Staunton is within walking distance and although we didn’t have a lot of time to explore the historic town we did enjoy a delicious dinner at the ???. I’d love to go back and do a little more exploring as the town has some wonderful architecture and small shops and galleries. Staunton is known as a small town delivering big culture. It was voted one of Travel + Leisure’s Favorite Towns in America!

 

Polyface Farm is just 20 minutes away where you can witness the holistic, sustainable farming practices of Joel Salatin, the most famous farmer in the world. I have read several of his books and highly recommend them!

 

There are also numerous breweries to experience on the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail.

 

We may not travel to Virginia that often but The Blackburn Inn is definitely a place we would like to return to. Next time we’ll have to plan a long weekend stay so we can enjoy the surrounding Shenandoah Valley.

 

It’s not often we stay in such a unique and historic inn. The way the building itself has been transformed into an modern inn while at the same time retaining it’s historic character is quite impressive. The staff greeted us upon arrival, was very attentive to our needs and made us feel right at home. The breakfast provided was excellent. We would highly recommend The Blackburn Inn.
