Making Progress in the Garden

Busy Month of June

I love it when the garden beds are finally all mulched and weeded and now I just have to stay on top of the little weeds that come along!

Nicely filled out garden bed.

It won’t be long before it will be time to cut the garlic scapes.Garlic Scapes If you haven’t tried growing garlic yet you really should give it a try. Each year I plant my garlic in August using garlic that was recently harvested. Each year I grow just enough to almost get us through to the next garlic harvest. I choose big cloves to plant and as a result the garlic I harvest is nice and plump and so tasty! An added benefit is harvesting the scapes, which you can use to make all sorts of things from pesto to garlic scape pickles and just using the scapes in a stir-fry!Garlic Scape Scampi

The lettuce and peas I planted last month are all coming along. Who doesn’t love fresh peas from the garden! Now to quickly get the fence up!peas

All the garden beds around the house have been weeded and mulched. Now we can just enjoy the beautiful Hostas and flowering plants.June flowers

My husband has been working on a little stone project to go around our chiminea. We have a large fire pit up behind the house but we thought it would be nice to have something smaller that the two of us could enjoy when we didn’t feel like making a larger campfire. My husband has been finding rocks on the property and has created a beautiful little area where we can sit in the evening and enjoy a little fire. It’s not finished yet but he’s enjoying the creative process!Chiminea

The areas where we have planted grass seed are coming along as well. I have a feeling the birds and chipmunks have also enjoyed some of the grass seed but it looks like it’s finally turning green!newly seeded area

I try to enjoy each season in Vermont. Our growing season is so short and the days seem to fly by so quickly! How are things where you live? Do you enjoy this special time of year?

  1. Here in Indiana, I’ve just cut my garlic scapes and am going to use them in stir-fry and as a side. I often simply saute them up in butter, olive oil, water and salt. They are delicious!! Your garden beds are so pretty and I am thoroughly jealous of your peas. I can “almost” grow anything but peas allude me! LOL!!

    1. Nina,
Oh garlic scape salted in a little butter and olive oil sounds delicious! I am always late in getting my peas planted and always wish I’d plan twice as many but we usually get just enough for a few meals and there is nothing better than fresh peas from the garden!

    1. Vickie,
There are so many things you can do with garlic scapes, maybe I’ll have to write a post on everything I’ve done with them; garlic scape pickles, garlic scape pesto or just in a stir fry!!

    1. Daisy, We’ve had such a dry spring but have gotten some rain recently and the garden is so much happier! Hope you get a bit of rain and some cooler weather so you can create your own fire pit! You are right, I will miss my gardens when we leave but it will be fun to create new ones!

Garlic scares are wonderful you can make Garlic Scape Pickles, Garlic scape pesto or just use them in a stir-fry! I usually cut them before they bloom maybe they get a little tough? I don’t know but you could try! Let me know!

  4. Summer is lovely in Southern California, but this year again it is very dry so the landscape around already looks parched. In the garden, the peas are done but the potatoes and sweet potatoes are thriving.
