Soap Update

making soap

You may remember over a month ago when I attempted to make soap? I had always wanted to make soap and had read many accounts of other people’s attempt to make soap. I had gathered all the ingredients needed and decided to give it a try. I would make Cold Process Soap and set up shop in our garage. I wanted to make sure the area was well ventilated!Making Soap

I was surprised at how easy it was to make. In no time at all I was pouring the mixture into my molds.Making Soap

The soap was allowed to harden for 48 hours before I removed the soap from the mold. The bars were then allowed to cure.making soap

After six weeks I decided to try the soap and see if it actually worked?making soap I lathered up under the faucet and was pleasantly surprised to see that my soap worked! My hands were clean!making soap

I’m so excited that I had success with making soap! Now to investigate a few more recipes and make another batch!

  1. Oh how cool, Nancy!
I’ve been wanting to make soap so bad………what a great way to save money. I went to purchase (ugh!) some hand soap and it was $7.00 per package of six (6) bars!!! Unbelievable. This is really exciting to know that you found it easy to make. I’ll have to start collecting my supplies so I can get started after the rush is over. Between the veggie garden, first time haying our field (don’t ask, it’s been a nightmare), making zucchini bread (hubby always wants at least 56, 2-pound loaves in the freezer to see him through the year, trying to keep everything watered around here (temps in the 100s lately) and all the normal housework and cooking, I don’t have a minute to spear. Ha! Tis the Season!
Congratulations on your successful soap making adventure. Looking forward to your next batch to see what recipe you chose.

  3. Hi Nancy! When you first posted about the soap I saw that this recipe was simpler and less time consuming than the one I’ve used for years so I tried it with three different oils – olive, coconut and vegetable oils. The difference in the soaps was dramatic. The olive and vegetable oils produced a soap that seemed hard when it dried, but it became really soft in the shower which was a disappointment. The coconut oil, however, produced beautiful, hard, long lasting bars. I’ve made soap for years so this wasn’t too much of a surprise for me, but I think when using a different oil in the future I’ll be running it by this calculator for a preview of what to expect when using different oils. If you’re interested here’s the web address for the calculator. It’s really handy. 🙂

    1. Toni,
Thanks for the link and the info. I will have to make a batch with coconut oil. I’ve been happy with the quality of the soap I made but it’s my first batch so I have nothing to compare it to!
